Forage first: why hay is the most important thing in the feed room
Most feed-room problems start with the scoop instead of the hay. A horse is built to graze sixteen hours a day, and everything else you feed is a footnote to that.

Walk into the feed room at most barns and the first thing you see is grain — labeled bins, scoops hanging on nails, a whiteboard with each horse's concentrate ration. The hay is somewhere else, stacked in a shed, treated like background. That ranking is backward. A 1,100-pound gelding evolved to spend sixteen to eighteen hours a day with his head down, pulling grass through a digestive system that never stops moving. Forage isn't the side dish. It's the meal.
At one boarding barn, a Thoroughbred named Dexter kept dropping weight and getting ulcer-y despite a generous grain ration. The owner kept asking which supplement to add. The real fix was embarrassingly simple: he was getting maybe twelve pounds of hay a day and standing in an empty stall for nine hours between meals. Doubling his hay, slowing it down with a small-hole net, and cutting his grain by a third was all it took. Within six weeks he'd gained condition and stopped grinding his teeth.
The reason forage matters so much is mechanical as well as nutritional. A horse's stomach secretes acid continuously, whether there's food in it or not. Chewing hay produces saliva, which buffers that acid; an empty stomach lets it splash against the unprotected upper lining, which is how squamous ulcers form. Long-stem forage also keeps the hindgut — where the real fermentation and calorie extraction happens — populated with the right microbial community. Starve that population of fiber, or flood it with sugar from too much grain, and you invite colic, hindgut acidosis, and behavior problems that look like training issues but aren't.
As a rule, feed at least 1.5 to 2 percent of body weight in forage per day on a dry-matter basis. For that average horse, that's roughly 16 to 22 pounds of hay, and most horses do beautifully at the higher end if they aren't easy keepers. Weigh it. A "flake" is a meaningless unit — flakes from the same bale can differ by two pounds, and bales from different cuttings differ wildly. Quality matters as much as quantity. Good grass hay — timothy, orchardgrass, a clean mixed-grass — should smell sweet, look green rather than yellow, and be free of dust, mold, and weeds. Run your hand into the middle of a flake; if it's warm or smells sour, reject the load. Legume hays like alfalfa pack more protein, calcium, and calories per pound, which makes them excellent for hard keepers, broodmares, and young growing horses, and too rich for the average pleasure horse who'll just get fat on it.
Here's the part owners resist: for a huge number of horses, good forage plus a ration balancer is the entire program. A ration balancer is a low-calorie, nutrient-dense feed fed at one to two pounds a day that fills the vitamin and mineral gaps hay leaves without dumping starch into the system. Only when a horse genuinely can't hold weight or condition on forage alone does a calorie-dense concentrate earn its place. The other thing forage buys you is time in the horse's day. A horse who runs out of hay at 8 p.m. and gets nothing until 6 a.m. has ten empty hours to invent vices: cribbing, weaving, wood-chewing, fence-walking. Slow feeders, multiple smaller hay piles in turnout, and free-choice access for non-easy-keepers all stretch the same poundage across more hours. The goal is a trickle, not a buffet that's gone in forty minutes.

For about thirty dollars, a forage lab will tell you the protein, the digestible energy, and — critically — the non-structural carbohydrate content, which is the number that matters for any metabolic or laminitic horse. Build the diet from the hay up, and most of the expensive questions answer themselves.
